In a world increasingly clamouring for our attention, the solace found in healthy relationships remains a cornerstone of happiness.  Across families, partnerships, and workplaces, strong connections nourish our spirits and enrich our lives. Yet, a constant undercurrent of discord seems to permeate our time. Headlines trumpet broken bonds, leaving us to wonder – where might the answer lie?

Perhaps the key rests not in the external world, but within.  Buddhist philosophy, a wellspring of wisdom for millennia, offers insights into the very nature of our minds. It suggests that our self-centred tendencies, fuelled by the modern emphasis on individual gain, may be the very roots of relational strife.

This talk delves into this notion, exploring how cultivating compassion and other-centeredness can foster deeper connections within our families.  By examining our own motivations and extending warmth to one another, we can cultivate the fertile ground for truly meaningful relationships.  We’ll explore practical guidance for nurturing these connections, transforming them into vital assets that enrich our lives.

About the presenter: Anagārikā Dr. Sumudu exemplifies the profound truth that service to others is the path to true fulfilment. Raised in the warm embrace of Sri Lanka, her journey led her to Australia, where, alongside her partner, she earned a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry at the prestigious Australian National University.

A transformative encounter with a wise teacher there ignited a profound shift. Inspired by a yearning for unconditional happiness, Dr. Sumudu and her then-husband made a life-altering decision. Leaving behind successful careers – hers as a respected scientist at Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration – they embarked on a path of selfless dedication.

As an Anagārikā, Dr. Sumudu has empowered countless individuals and communities to navigate life’s challenges. Her keen intellect, honed by scientific rigor, is now masterfully interwoven with a deep understanding of Buddhist philosophy. Through mindful awareness and contemplative reflection, she guides individuals to step out of psychological struggles and into a life of inner harmony and lasting well-being.

She currently volunteers as headteacher of Buddhist International Girls School, a school steeped in Buddhist values. Here, she nurtures young minds and leads a team of over fifty staff fostering the potential for future world leaders imbued with compassion and wisdom. Renowned for her unwavering commitment and boundless compassion, Dr. Sumudu offers guidance and loving-kindness to all who seek it.
