Most of us offer spiritual care to our family and friends every day without realising it – our compassion is aroused when we see someone we love in distress and, hopefully, we both come away from our interaction feeling comforted and a little more at ease. Rarely does our spiritual care use religious means, even though it is deeply informed by how our spirituality and religious practices have shaped us.
Have you ever wondered if you could offer skilful spiritual care to someone you didn’t know – someone in crisis and distress, who may be isolated, incarcerated, sick, dying, bullied, traumatised, unsure of who they are anymore and where they fit in to the world? I hope to explore how each of us can become more skilful and more intentional in offering spiritual care in our everyday lives and in institutional settings.
About the speaker: Nicola works as a Mental Health Chaplain at Cumberland Hospital (Westmead) and as a Clinical Pastoral Supervisor for the Mental Health Clinical Pastoral Education Centre in NSW. She is passionate about supporting people who feel called into spiritual care practice and offers the education and training required to become a chaplain across multiple contexts, including prisons, hospitals, aged care, Defense, emergency services, temples/communities, schools, universities, and workplaces. A Buddhist practitioner for 25 years, Nicola operates on an intentional multifaith basis, both in her practice as a Chaplain and also in her supervisory practice. Nicola loves wilderness hiking, embracing the challenges of navigation, ever-changing territory and camaraderie in equal measure!
Hybrid event: Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive session in person at the Metta Centre or online by clicking on this link to access the session: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/
