The Buddha’s teachings explain the cultivation of meditative factors such as samadhi, equanimity, and mindfulness. However, at times the ancient texts lack detail around how to bring these practices into daily life, particularly for people who aren’t monastics. The teachings on śamatha (calm abiding) and particularly Asanga’s teaching of the Elephant Path (presented in a modern interpretation in the book The Mind Illuminated), offer clear, precise directions on how to train the mind to bring forward skilful qualities. Through skilfully navigating thoughts, engaging foreground attention and background awareness, and working with dullness and sleepiness, all meditative practitioners can gain confidence in their ability to move towards calm and clarity. This talk will involve meditation instruction, discussion, and q+a.
About the Speaker: Kynan Tan is a meditation teacher who is interested in collaborating to navigate the vast range of tools and techniques most effectively to create freedom and meaning in our lives, today. He came to meditation and Dharma practice after difficulties with mental health and found the practice to be transformative. Kynan is authorised to teach Dharma in a lineage that can be traced back to the Buddha. Kynan has practised a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice and draws on his experience as an artist, musician, educator, and programmer in order to teach in a way that is clear, practical, and creative. Kynan leads silent retreats, teaches 1:1, offers courses, and runs weekly classes.
