Continuing from the previous class: in part two we will see how the mind of enlightenment can be cultivated in a practical and logical way. Using the Sevenfold Instruction of Cause and Effect, we will sequentially move from developing equanimity — an evenness towards all sentient beings — through to generating the enlightened mind itself.

The importance of this mind of enlightenment is exemplified in the life of Atīśa. By all traditional accounts, Jowo Atīśa — a master associated with Vikramaśīla Vihāra — undertook a thirteen month sea voyage from India to Suvarṇadvīpa (Sumatra), where he studied bodhicitta under Serlingpa for twelve years. His commitment to cultivating and transmitting the mind of enlightenment became one of the defining legacies of his life.

By making the mind of enlightenment our core practice, our life takes on a new meaning and purpose. No longer bogged down by anxiety or a sense of aimlessness, our life — regardless of our age — continuously unfolds along the path of enlightenment.

About the Teacher: Robert Tomic has been practically involved with Tibetan Buddhism for the past thirty-two years, during which he has received teachings and empowerments from all four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, both in Australia and overseas.

For many years he has taught Tibetan Buddhism on both an individual and group basis - in people’s homes, in public parks, and on university campuses - to anyone genuinely interested in learning and applying the unique steps that can begin to undo the confusion of living in a seemingly contradictory world.
Robert wishes to help others become proactive participants in recognising the preciousness of their own lives and the fulfilment that comes from understanding those lives more deeply.
