Arya Shantideva kindly tells us at the beginning of The Boddhisatva’s Way of Life: “those who wish to overcome the sorrows of their lives and put to flight the pain and sufferings of beings, those who wish to win such great beatitude, should never turn their back on bodhichitta.”

In part three of A Love That Leads to Enlightenment, we continue our own journey along the Bodhisattva’s path and examine how compassion functions as a direct antidote to the very causes of suffering. When we aspire to think of others with the same care we naturally extend to ourselves, we begin to undermine the self cherishing mind even before formal meditation begins.

Far from poetry and much closer to lived reality, compassion allows us to develop loving-kindness, and loving-kindness in turn gives rise to universal responsibility – the sincere wish to become responsible for guiding all beings to full enlightenment.
Understanding that the mind of enlightenment (bodhichitta) is a practical possibility affirms the preciousness of our human rebirth — an opportunity that may not arise again. Once the mind of enlightenment is acquired, it remains with us from lifetime to lifetime until full awakening is achieved. And it all begins with a single wish.

About the Teacher: Robert Tomic has been practically involved with Tibetan Buddhism for the past thirty-two years, during which he has received teachings and empowerments from all four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, both in Australia and overseas.

For many years he has taught Tibetan Buddhism on both an individual and group basis - in people’s homes, in public parks, and on university campuses - to anyone genuinely interested in learning and applying the unique steps that can begin to undo the confusion of living in a seemingly contradictory world.
Robert wishes to help others become proactive participants in recognising the preciousness of their own lives and the fulfilment that comes from understanding those lives more deeply.
