Some Buddhist Techniques on How to Live Life Better

Speaker: Theresa Baw (in person)

17 June 2026 | 7.00-8.30pm AEST

Location: In person at Western Sydney University, Parramatta City Campus (Entry at 1 Parramatta Square), Level 5 Room 1.5.39;

or Online (Zoom link below)

Cost: Free

In this talk Theresa will share from her direct experience, some Buddhist ways that she has alleviated and managed some of the suffering from her own life. These include: mindfulness - the state of awareness that prevents you forgetting yourself; gratitude -  to help abandon discontentment; self-compassion - replacing self-judgment with kindness and care; morality - a foundational buffer against suffering; and the support of kalyana mitta: having wise and virtuous friends influences your tendencies and habits.

The talk will also be an opportunity to learn and practice insight meditation, hopefully both sitting and walking.

There will also be time for Q&A and may be some feedback on an individual’s meditation practice. Both beginners and experienced participants are welcome.

About the Presenter: Theresa Baw has been a Buddhist practitioner of meditation since 2001. She has benefited from the teachings and practices of the Theravada traditions including: Mahasi Sayadaw; the Thai Forest tradition; and meditation on the Brahama Viharas. She has led regular group meditation sessions for the Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre and volunteered on their working committee. Theresa works as a barrister and has taught meditation to her work colleagues for a number of years. She has regularly given talks and mediation courses at the Buddhist Library, Sydney. Theresa has volunteered at primary schools as a Special Religious Education teacher in Buddhism. She also volunteered in the palliative care unit at a hospital. In between raising a child, she regularly attends silent vipassana meditation retreats in Australia and overseas. Painting and sculpture is one of her hobbies and Theresa has donated many of her artworks at auctions and exhibits to raise funds for Buddhist charities and causes.
